Sam Fender was awarded the Mercury Prize recently in Newcastle

The artist has given the entirety of his £25k award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the Britain's small live music spots.

Fender was given the prize on 16 October as his latest record his work was chosen as the best record of the past year.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I played around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support numerous local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported venues that were confronting imminent closure due to issues stemming from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces received funding support in improving amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The notion that revenue from shows in big venues supports the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

The musician is among several artists to donate his honor funds to worthy causes.

During 2002, artist she split her award across a few organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a grand to my local community centre, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

In recent years, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the local youth club that developed their band, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally the 1994 recipients they contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," stated singer Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had saved several grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in that area and The Croft in Bristol were bought under the community ownership program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
