RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
